Is once again covered with all manner of bluster about guns, gun rights, terrorism and mental health.

Kinja'd!!!

But shouting isn’t going to help. But there are some facts that people just don’t seem to recognize:

1. Terrorists of all sorts genuinely believe they’re carrying out God’s will. This includes all manner of white Christians that the media refuses to acknowledge are terrorists. Call them what they are. They’re not “patriots,” by any means.

2. 2/3 of all the people who will die of gunshot wounds this year... pulled the trigger themselves. If we really gave a shit about mental health we’d put more effort into treating the depression and PTSD that leads to so many suicides.

Maybe if we acknowledge these things we can work to find solutions. Just my $.02

Nah, those topics aren’t nearly as emotionally charged as what’s currently on the news. We’ll stick with what we’re discussing. You know, for ratings.

Truthfully yours,

The Media/Social Media

I got a degree in political science. I generally love to participate in rational arguing, also known as debates,. I’ve made a living working in social media for over four years.

What have I learned from all of this?

To no longer open my mouth, literally or by means of posting on Facebook, when something controversial happens. The majority of people are irrational and incapable of participating in a mature discussion that is based primarily on facts and well-reasoned opinions. It devolved into a shouting match because people are so entrenched in their own beliefs, whether they’re well-founded or not, that they absolutely refuse to accept anything else, and to even bring up a counterpoint makes you an absolute extreme of the other side.

I’m gonna live my life and hold my opinions. If someone wants to know what I think then they can ask me, and they’d better be able to deal with it like an adult if I disagree with them.

Sir, that makes way too much sense. Seriously, the only people who get press when talking about such issues are those with extremely polarizing opinions.

Right wingers get upset when the media doesn’t immediately shout “terrorism” when a brown guy shoots people, but when it comes to the guy who shot up the Planned Parenthood clinic, somehow those same people want to blame anyone but the trigger man. And God forbid someone labels that shooter for what he truly is: a terrorist.

Another thing, a lot of the homicidal shootings (the other 1/3) are either domestic incidents or gang related. I think if we fix some of the other broken shit in the country, like our education system, and start investing in things like infrastructure, repairing the environment, etc. we can help get people out of living in poverty, joining gangs, dealing drugs, etc. which are all contributing factors to these other shootings. Good education might also help get some of these people to pull their heads out of their asses and not, say, go shoot up a Planned Parenthood over viral media that was proven patently false.

Yeah but, shit son, that’s just too damn hard for our quick-fix society. And we don’t want to acknowledge REAL problems, because that would make us FEEL bad, and we don’t want to FEEL bad at all. So of course we go for stuff like this, because this makes us THINK we’re doing something important, instead of ACTUALLY doing something important.

Remember kids, you can't spell slacktivist without "act".

Here’s my opinion:

The primary function of a gun is to fire a bullet. Firing bullets at things damages them. Firing bullets at people injures or kills them.

In the US, it is very easy for people who intend to use a gun to do bad things to legally purchase a gun and ammunition.

Most normal adult citizens going about their day to day business have no need to fire bullets at things.

While there are legitimate uses for guns, none of them outweighs the need to prevent bad people from having access to guns to do bad things.

It is more important to limit the ability of people who want to use guns to hurt/injure other people, than it is to protect the right of people who do not intend to use guns for evil, to purchase guns.

The belief that if there are more armed Law Abiding Citizens™, that those armed Law Abiding Citizens™ will effectively use their guns to stop armed evil-doers, is a fallacy.

Ban all guns, immediately.

People willingly killing themselves are very different to children being killed in a school. But you’re right, it’s a mental issue that needs more attention.
